DJ N.VS Loves Shanghai

N.VS, aka Chicago rapper, producer, engineer, promoter, and DJ Nick Woolley, shares what he learned through his participation in Hip Hop ChicaGO and sharing his art with the people of Shanghai.

What were your 3 favorite things about Shanghai?

1. Getting to meet and hang out with such dope artists. Really everyone in the group is genuinely talented at what they do. I am by far the least experienced in my field and yet the group took me in and we put together a huge show.

2. Building with the b-boys and b-girls at Fudan has definitely gotta be one of the high points of the trip for me. I couldn’t even communicate with some of them due to language barriers, but that didn’t stop us from being connected culturally through this music and being able to share that love for it.

3. Lastly gotttttta say Suntory.

What were your hopes for Hip Hop ChicaGO and the trip to Shanghai?

First and foremost when I had heard about the opportunity to audition for this event, the thing that got me to the audition was “a trip to China.” It’s awesome that I can say hip hop took me to China. But really, once I became a part of the family, I definitely felt that the ability to build and network with such talented people is what I’ve gained most from the experience. I know I’m going to be hitting almost everybody up to be asking for their help in their field at one point or another (and I hope they know they can do the same).

What was it like to meet and dance with students from Fudan University?

The university was ridiculous. The ability to communicate almost solely through dance with none of us speaking a Chinese language, and only a few of them able to speak English, is pretty crazy. I was most intrigued by the interviews I got from a couple of the local breakers. It was great to really see what the local b-boys and b-girls’ thoughts were on hip hop culture as a whole, both globally and locally there in Shanghai. I got a couple email addresses and will definitely be staying in touch with them.

Did you have any particularly memorable experiences at the World Expo?

I gotta say without a doubt the most memorable part of the Expo performances had to be after our last and biggest show–just the amount of love that people showed afterward. The whole team was signing autographs and getting our pictures taken with people; they couldn’t get enough. They seemed mad appreciative that we brought and shared our culture with them, and I want to say…. We are MAD appreciative of all y’all in Shanghai!!! We’ll be back!

What do you hope the people of Shanghai took away from your performances?

I hope that we created an awareness of the culture. Hip hop is a great way to strengthen communities and a positive activity for youths. My hope is that they are thirsty and want learn more!

St. Bagu Reflects on the Shanghai World Expo

The 6 members of St. Bagu took some time to reflect on their experiences in Hip Hop ChicaGO and at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Here’s what Moe, Chi Can, Freddy, Tony, Opio, and Jason had to say:

What were your 3 favorite things about Shanghai?

Our top three things about Shanghai were 1) The company that we had–being able to share such a memorable trip with such great people; 2) Performing on a huge stage for a huge audience is one of the most amazing experiences ever; and 3) The accommodations were great–from the awesome view, the hot tub, and great breakfast to the market haggling.  We’ll take these memories with us forever.

What were your hopes for Hip Hop ChicaGO and the trip to Shanghai?

We were hoping to deepen our relationship with the other hip hop artists from Chicago and show everyone who would see–from the people of China to Mayor Daley–that Chicago hip hop is where it’s at.  That was clearly accomplished.  We are still doing our best to stay in touch with the other performers, and we knocked the socks off everyone watching us perform.

What was it like to meet and dance with students from Fudan University?

As a band, we didn’t get to do as much interacting with the students as the dancers did, but it was a great experience to watch these people from the other side of the world vibe to the same stuff we grew up to.

Did you have any particularly memorable experiences at the World Expo?

Our drummer Jason came up with a term to sum up the feeling he had during our all music set called “time freeze moment.” We had many time freeze moments, like while singing songs about purpose in a foreign country, with a crowd totally engaged in our set despite the language barrier–a moment where we could only say, “Wow! Are we really here right now? Everything God has placed in our hearts is unfolding before our very eyes.”  And on top of that, being called back out on stage to sign autographs…amazing!

What do you hope the people of Shanghai took away from your performances?

Well we know they enjoyed it without question. They have some of our CDs now, so we hope they listen, and we hope our songs can serve them. We would love to hear from them one day in the future.  Hopefully, we’ve left a positive impact as to what Chicago has to offer in the emergent hip hop scene as well as an eagerness to hear and see more of St. Bagu.

Day 2 at Shanghai World Expo

By: Monty Rezell (of Stick and Move Dance Crew)

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Hip Hop ChicaGO rocks the World Expo…again! Another amazing night. Tonight’s performance was even better than yesterday. The crowd was hyped and loving every bit of it! All elements of the show were ten times better tonight. The DJ, emcee, b-boys and b-girl, and the band were all excellent. This was a great experience performing in Shanghai. I enjoyed every moment of it and am feeling a little down because this trip is coming to an end L But no worries; Hip Hop ChicaGO will be at it again soon. We were already invited back to perform at a leadership conference next year.

We have great footage of the show! Stayed tuned for that. We will have it up ASAP. The setting was intense backstage when the dancers had to rework a few scenes because we were unsure if two dancers would make it back from a demonstration for the City of Chicago and alumni from Chicago universities. Five minutes before the show Joleethal and J Funky arrived back stage, just in time to get dressed, pray, and hop on stage for the start of the show. They made it just in time, and all the dancers ripped the show and danced better than I have seen all week! From backspins to windmills, from swipes to headspins, from freezes to flips, the dancers were FRESH to DEF! Our flares had FLARE, our tops really ROCKED! Couldn’t have asked for a better show.

From the bass kick to the strum of the guitar, from the bassline to the stroke of the keys, St. Bagu was amazing and rocked the crowd so well. They had an angelic unity in the music tonight. They were so unified that when the DJ had technical issues, the band filled in and played for the dancers without discussion or planning. They really stepped up and saved the day! All in all we had a wonderful time and a wonderful performance representing Chicago at the World Expo 2010!

Technical Difficulties

By: DJ N.VS

Getting ready to leave. Seems crazy to think that we could end up being back here next year. We all started as strangers and are leaving as family. We rocked four Expo shows, each better than the next. We probably rocked for at least 300+ people last night.

For a minute it was looking like one thing after the next continued to go wrong for me with gear while I was out here. Jungle joked to me at one point, “Damn, I wish I was the DJ so I could just be drinking a beer.” But after having to deal with all the equipment issues that came up on this trip, I don’t wish it on anybody else.

The day before the first show I pulled out my deck and mixer to practice and make sure nothing was damaged. I set everything up, went to plug the mixer in, and…”Hssssssssssss.” Smoke started coming from the mixer’s adapter. “Sh*t.” The question now was, Is it just the adapter that’s fried or did the whole mixer fry?

Mind you this is THE DAY BEFORE the show.

After heading to an electrical repair joint that night we found out that it’s the mixer that got fried. Now, 14 hours before the show, I have no mixer, leaving Hip Hop ChicaGO with no DJ. After a grip of phone calls Yuchia was able to secure a mixer rental from the Expo. (Yuchia, you’re a superhero!)

First Day: Problem solved, two successful shows.

Second day: More problems arise.

“Time Freeze” Moments at the Shanghai World Expo

By: Jason Alamo (drummer from the band St. Bagu)

There are few moments in life where everything slows down around you and you begin to wonder how exactly you ended up at that moment. As the drummer for St.Bagu and Hip Hop ChicaGO I have the advantage of seeing the performances from a unique point of view. It is as if I am part audience, part performer. While dancers spin in circles and emcees run to rile up crowds on different sides of the stage, I am stationary and have a complete 180 degree view of the performance and the audience simultaneously. I spent the whole set at last night’s music showcase on the Shanghai World Expo’s Americas Square stage frozen in time, trying to break down all the things that fell into place to bring this amazing group of people together. Never in my life did I think I would be in a band and share a stage with 8 breakdancers, an MC, and a DJ and ROCK a crowd halfway around the world.

Yesterday almost seemed effortless. I say almost because after the music showcase we began the next showcase with the complete Hip Hop ChicaGO crew. The crowd was warmed up and ready to see some great dancing. Everything was going well until we hit a snag when the DJ’s mixer went out. People were scrambling back and forth trying to figure out how to compensate. The band was ready to go and fill in wherever necessary. Luckily the mixer came back to life and we were able to keep the damage minimal. The Hip Hop ChicaGO crew came together and was able to put on yet another great performance. All the b-boys and b-girl were awesome. We all had a feeling it was going to be a special day.

We woke up yesterday morning to Ambrose on the front page of the Shanghai Daily. Hip Hop ChicaGO in Chinese newspapers overnight? Time freeze moment.  It got better after that. After a few hours of shopping at one of the local markets, Tony, Freddy, and I took the train back to our hotel. As we exited Freddy looked up at one of the TVs playing the local news and shouted, “That’s us!!” Hip Hop ChicaGO was on the local Chinese news station? Time freeze moment.

What is Hip Hop Music?

what is hip hop

By: Moises Pacheco (guitarist from the band St. Bagu)

St. Bagu calls itself a “Hip Hop fusion band.” What the heck? Supposedly that means we are “fusing” hip hop music with other styles. But what is hip hop music? How do you define it? The past several weeks I have been teaching a hip hop clinic at Chase Elementary School and I learned some things about this “hip hop.” When I had the kids listen to two tracks, one by Public Enemy and the other by Run-DMC, they told me that those songs were in fact not “hip hop”–at least not real hip hop. According to these kids, real hip hop includes songs like… “Pretty Boy Swag.” I found this to be quite depressing. These kids are so lost when it comes to the real art of hip hop. Then I asked myself, “What would adults think of hip hop?”

I began to think of some of the music and videos I was big on in the ’90s: “Baby Got Back,” “I Get Around,” “Hay,”… and the list goes on. When you compare St. Bagu music to these tracks, there are many differences. Now I start to ask myself, “What do I think ‘hip hop’ is?” I began to do a bit of research and found an interesting documentary called Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes. It has some graphic language in it, just as much of hip hop does (not St. Bagu, though), but it addresses a number of significant topics when it comes to what hip hop has become.

What do you guys think? What has hip hop become? How is that affecting our children and the world around us? What will it be like in the future and how can we affect that? I’d love to hear your feedback. If you haven’t seen the documentary, you can check it out below. Stay tuned.
